Is Your Flue Leaking? A Test Will Tell You

A chimney pressure test seals the flue at both ends, fills it with air at a controlled pressure and measures how much escapes. A smoke test does the same job visually, filling the flue with smoke so leaks show themselves at the stack, in the loft or through a neighbouring wall. Both answer the same question: is this flue airtight?
It matters because a leaking flue lets combustion gases into rooms they should never reach, including next door on a shared stack. We test before liner installations, after chimney fires, during house sales and whenever an inspection finds something we want to prove. The result comes to you as a written report, pass or fail.

“Punctual, spotlessly clean and genuinely knowledgeable. They showed me photos of the whole flue and explained everything clearly. Wouldn’t use anyone else.”

Frequently Asked Questions

Common questions about chimney pressure and smoke testing.

Still have a question?

Our friendly team is on hand to help with anything about your chimney, stove or flue.

A trained chimney engineer with the right sealing and gauge equipment. It is not a job that gets done properly with a smoke pellet and guesswork.

Often not. If the flue is in regular use, draws well and shows no staining, you can leave it. A test earns its money when you are relining, buying the property, sharing a stack with a neighbour, or the chimney has had a fire. We will tell you honestly if it is unnecessary.

A pressure test measures leakage as a number, which gives you a defensible pass or fail. A smoke test shows you where the leak is. They answer different questions, so we often run both: one to prove the flue fails, the other to find out why.

We tell you where it is leaking and what the options are. Usually that means lining the flue, occasionally repointing or rebuilding the stack above. You get the report either way, and you are free to take it to another contractor. The test result is yours, not a sales tool.

No. Sealing the flue is temporary, the smoke used is a cold non-staining type, and everything comes out as it went in. We sheet the hearth as a matter of course. Please expect a faint smell for an hour or two afterwards, which clears on its own.

Most tests take one to two hours per flue, and the report follows within. We can usually fit testing around a sale deadline if you tell us the date. Call and we will work backwards from it.
