A chimney sweep clears the soot and tar that builds up in your flue over a season of burning, and checks that smoke is drawing the way it should. We sweep open fires, wood burners, stoves and gas flues, and we use sheeting and a sealed vacuum so the soot goes into the machine rather than onto your carpet.
Every sweep ends with a certificate, which most home insurers now ask for and every landlord needs. It depends on what you burn. Wood burners and open fires burning seasoned wood need sweeping once a year, smokeless fuel twice a year, and bituminous coal twice a year. If you only light the fire at Christmas, once a year is still worth it, because birds nest in unused flues.
No. We sheet the hearth and surrounding floor before anything else, then seal the fireplace opening and run a vacuum that holds the soot under negative pressure the whole time. The soot leaves in the drum. Customers are often surprised there is nothing to clean up.
If you are a landlord, yes. Most home insurers also ask for one after a chimney fire, and some will not pay out without it. We issue the certificate at the end of every sweep at no extra charge, and we can email a copy if you need it for an agent.
The price depends on your chimney, including the number of flues and how easy it is to access. We confirm the price when you book, so there are no surprises on the day, and it includes your sweeping certificate. Book in late summer if you can. September to November is the busiest stretch of the year for every sweep in the South East, and lead times stretch out. Booking in July or August usually gets you the slot you want. Call us to check the diary.
